How Wing money reaches your BK8 account
Wing reaches further into Cambodia than any branch network — 12,000 agents, most of them women running the shop out front. Here is how a Wing transfer becomes a playable balance with us: the Bakong rail underneath it, the dollar rule that governs it, and what it costs.
Why Wing is in almost every pocket in Cambodia
ធនាគារវីង arrived before smartphones did and never left. Wing Bank was founded in 2008 and today runs 27 branch offices, more than 12,000 agents and over 200,000 SME merchants — a footprint that reaches communes a long way from any branch counter. Roughly 80% of those agents are women, usually working the till of the shop the agent sign hangs on. The Android app carries more than 5 million downloads against 139,000 reviews and a 3.4 rating, and its everyday jobs are the ordinary ones: topping up Cellcard, Metaphone, Smart, QB, CooTel or Yes Seatel, sending Wing Ang Pao digital red packets, and pushing Wing WeiLuy cash-out codes to people who do not have the app at all. That last feature is the tell. Wing was built for a country where cash still moves faster than cards, and that is why Wing money is a sensible way to fund a balance with us rather than an awkward one.
What a Wing transfer actually rides on
A Wing transfer is not locked inside Wing, and that is the single most useful thing to understand about it. Wing Bank is a member of Bakong, the mobile payment and banking system initiated and operated by the National Bank of Cambodia — 63 institutions are official members with seven more in the process of integrating. Once you are on that rail, money moves to ABA, ACLEDA, Canadia, Sathapana, TrueMoney, eMoney, Pi Pay, Ly Hour Pay Pro, BongLoy, U-Pay Digital and the rest of the list by QR scan, phone number, or a name picked out of your contacts. Sitting on top of Bakong is KHQR, Cambodia's one national QR standard: a single merchant code accepts customers of any participating bank or wallet. It launched in early July 2022 with all 37 Bakong participants supporting it on day one, replacing roughly 50 mutually incompatible bank QR codes at checkout. The Bakong page covers the rail itself; the KHQR page covers the code you scan.
- Bakong was designed explicitly to bring roughly 70% of the population — the unbanked — into the formal banking system, and its consumer app launched in 2020.
- The rail carries two currencies, Khmer riel and US dollars, and keeps them strictly separate.
- There is no cap on the number of Bakong transfers you can make in a day; only amounts are capped.
- Those amount caps are set by each member institution individually, not by the National Bank — so your Wing limit is Wing's, not the country's.
- Registering takes a National ID card or passport plus a local valid phone number, and only individual savings or current accounts qualify; joint and fixed-deposit accounts cannot be registered.
- Bakong is not a central bank digital currency. Around 80% of its payments are in US dollars and the balances behind them are commercial-bank money.
The code itself is a merchant-presented standard. The National Bank's KHQR Guideline, published in November 2020, documents a static version — the printed sticker taped to a counter — and a dynamic version generated fresh for a single transaction with the amount already written into it. When you scan a dynamic code, the sum is fixed before you tap confirm, which removes the most common way a payment goes wrong: typing the amount yourself, at speed, on a phone.
The match applies to your first deposit and the spins land on slots. Balances run in USD — no riel conversion to think about.
The currency rule that decides whether your money lands
One rule governs everything else on this page, so we will put it before the instructions rather than after them. We run Cambodian balances in US dollars. Our platform uses two internal codes for this market, KHUSD and KHEUR, which resolve to dollars and euros, and our registration configuration restricts the Cambodia region to a single currency: USD. The string KHR appears zero times in the platform configuration — there is no riel account to open with us and no quiet conversion step waiting inside the cashier. Now set that beside the rail's own hard constraint: Bakong does not do cross-currency. The transfer currency and the account currency must match, and there is no in-app FX anywhere in the chain. Put the two together and you get one instruction. The leg of the journey that reaches us has to be a dollar leg. A riel balance in Wing is not useless — it is money, and it spends everywhere in the country — but it cannot become a dollar transfer by wishing.
Three bank codes are configured on our side for Cambodian deposits: ABA, ACLEDA and Maybank, and every one of them sits on the Bakong rail. Wing money reaches the same cashier the same way — a transfer sent from a dollar balance, or a KHQR scan that is already denominated in dollars. If a deposit stalls, currency mismatch is the first thing to check.
Moving Wing money into your account, step by step
Do it in one sitting with the phone in your hand. The sequence below assumes you already have the Wing Bank App installed and a balance in it; if the balance is in the wrong currency, fix that at an agent counter before you start rather than halfway through.
- Check which balance you are sending from. Open the Wing Bank App and confirm the amount you intend to move is sitting in dollars, because the rail will not convert it for you.
- Finish account verification first. A Cambodian account with us needs a mobile number under the 855 country code and an email address, both verified; identity checks run through Sumsub, which is enabled on both of our Cambodian currency codes.
- Decide the amount before you open the cashier, not during. The welcome match is calculated from the first deposit that lands, and a first deposit only happens once.
- Open the cashier and pick the Wing or KHQR route. The confirmation screen shows the currency; if it does not say USD, stop there.
- Scan or transfer from the Wing Bank App. Tap QR Scan on the home screen for a code, or use a straight transfer to the destination the cashier gives you.
- Confirm in the app with your PIN and wait for the push notification. A Bakong transfer settles on the rail rather than through a card network, so nothing is queued behind a card scheme in the middle.
- The cashier shows the minimum for this rail on screen before you confirm the transfer. Once it posts, claim the offer — +1500% on that first deposit plus 250 free spins on slots.
Fees, limits and who actually sets them
Cambodians ask about fees before they ask about anything else, and rightly — on this rail most of them are zero, and the ones that exist are small and banded. What confuses people is that no single institution publishes one set of limits. The National Bank sets the rail; each member sets its own ceilings on top of it. The table below is the honest version of that: the numbers that are published, and the name of whoever published them.
| What | The published number | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Wing agent cash-out | Free, no minimum — 'from 2,000 riels to millions' | Wing Bank |
| Number of Bakong transfers per day | No cap on the count | National Bank of Cambodia |
| Amount per transfer and per day | Set individually by each member | Your own bank or wallet |
| Bakong wallet balance ceiling | 10,000,000 KHR or 2,500 USD | National Bank of Cambodia |
| ABA out to Bakong members | Up to 60,000 USD per transaction and per day | ABA Bank |
| ABA out to a Bakong wallet | 1,000 USD a transaction, 2,500 a day, 20,000 a month | ABA Bank |
| ABA into a Bakong wallet, fee by band | Free to 50 USD, then 0.50 to 500 USD, then 1.00 to 1,000 USD | ABA Bank |
| Out of an ACLEDA Bakong account | Free; 2,500 USD a transfer, 10,000 USD a day | ACLEDA Bank |
| Into a Bakong account from ACLEDA | Free to 50 USD, then 0.50 / 1.00 / 1.50 by band | ACLEDA Bank |
| Incoming transfers to ABA from Bakong members | Free, no stated limit | ABA Bank |
Read down that column and the pattern is obvious: the expensive steps are the ones that involve a wallet balance rather than a bank account, and the free ones are bank-to-bank over Bakong. Transfers between your own accounts at one institution are free too — ACLEDA, for instance, charges nothing to move money between a customer's wallet, bank, trading and credit-card accounts, with no daily limit on how many times you do it. Plan the chain so the fee-bearing hop, if there is one, happens once.
Both banks are configured on BK8 for Cambodian accounts, so money moves on rails you already use every day.
Cash without a card, at the agent counter
The Wing agent network is the reason this page exists rather than being a footnote on a bank page. Open the Wing Bank App, tap QR Scan on the home screen, scan the code at any Wing Agent displaying the Bakong Cash-Out sign, and take the money. No card, no machine, no fee, no minimum — Wing's own published range is from 2,000 riels to millions. Compare that with an ATM, which does the same job worse: Cambodian operator fees run roughly 4 to 10 US dollars per withdrawal, with Vattanac at the low end and ABA commonly cited at 6 to 10, a standard 500 dollar per-transaction limit at ABA, ACLEDA, Canadia and CPBank, and machines that hand you 50s and 100s whether you wanted them or not.
The contrast with bank-run cash desks is starker still. ABA does physical cash-in and cash-out for a Bakong wallet at exactly one location — its Head Office Operational Hall on Preah Sihanouk Boulevard in Phnom Penh — where putting cash in costs 0.50 to 1.50 US dollars by band and taking it out costs 0.50. One hall in the capital against 12,000 counters spread across the provinces is the entire argument for Wing. TrueMoney runs the same trick from the other side: its agent scans your KHQR from any Bakong member app and does cash-in or cash-out for accounts at more than 60 institutions, across 10,000 agents, in riel or dollars, and a TrueMoney wallet also loads over the counter at any 7-Eleven. That route is written up here.
Riel, dollars and the 4,000 convention
Cambodia is heavily dollarized: at the end of 2025, 83.4% of broad money was denominated in US dollars. Everyone here already lives with two currencies at once, and the working convention is 4,000 riel to the dollar, with riel handed back as change for anything under a dollar. That is the number in people's heads, not the market rate. The market rate is close but not identical — ACLEDA's board on 10 September 2026 read 4,048 riel buy and 4,062 sell. The reason riel became sub-dollar change at all is structural rather than cultural: from June 2020 the National Bank moved to phase 1, 2 and 5 dollar notes out of domestic circulation, having banks collect and ship them abroad. Small notes were never banned or invalidated; banks simply stopped distributing them. Riel now fills that gap, in denominations from 100 up to 50,000 with no coins in practical circulation. For a deposit, the takeaway is narrow: an amount quoted at 4,000 and the same amount converted at a board rate are not the same amount. Keep the whole chain in dollars and the arithmetic disappears.
Getting it back out, and the other doors in
Money leaves the way it arrived. A withdrawal is the same rail run backwards — dollars out to a dollar destination, no cross-currency step in the middle — and from there a Wing agent counter turns it into notes without a card or a fee. Our withdrawals page covers what we ask for before the first payout clears. If Wing is not the right door today, several others open onto the same cashier.
If a friend pointed you at us, our Cambodia referral promotion runs on the code KHLOVEBK8 and pays USD 8 on deposit — worth typing in before you confirm, because it cannot be added afterwards. And one last piece of housekeeping, which matters more than the fee tables above. Wing makes moving money quick, and that is exactly the quality that deserves a limit attached to it. Set a deposit cap and a session length while the account is still empty — it takes five minutes then and is a much harder conversation later. The tools are here and they are ours, not a badge borrowed from somewhere else. When you are ready, open the cashier: the first deposit carries +1500% and 250 free spins, and a Wing transfer is the shortest route to it.
